I purchased the RIP Baby Umbrella Rig V2 along with all the recommended jigs and soft plastics and took it out to an area of the lake that was absolutely loaded with bait balls. I figured this was going to be the perfect place to put it to the test.
I paired it with my Kestrel Ultimate BFS baitcaster and 8 lb braid. That turned out to be mistake #1. 😂 If you’re going to throw this thing on a BFS setup, use the maximum recommended line which in my case, 10 lb braid. After a few casts, the line snapped, the entire rig launched into orbit, and my baitcaster rewarded me with my first-ever bird’s nest. So not only did I lose the rig, it also managed to ruin my perfect no bird’s-nest record on the Kestrel. Impressive.
As far as the fish were concerned, the water was pretty clear and the rig seemed to do a better job of spooking the bait balls than attracting the bass. The bass wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Needless to say, somewhere on the bottom of the lake is a brand-new RIP Baby Umbrella Rig V2, fully equipped with jigs and soft plastics, while a group of bass are probably gathered around it laughing their asses off. Maybe I’ll get it back this winter when they open the dam and drop the lake level.
Final review: Can’t say whether it catches fish, but I can confirm it catches fishermen. 😂🎣
Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your experience. While the size of the RIP Baby definitely allows you to downsize compared to a full-size, fully loaded A-Rig, we do NOT recommend throwing the RIP Baby on a BFS set up. We do recommend using at least a medium heavy powered casting combo with a minimum of 15lb fluoro, mono or copolymer line. The RIP Baby is compact, but fully loaded it can weigh around 2oz's. Because of this, we also do not recommend using anything less than 40lb braid with a mono or fluoro leader. Braid tends to dig in on itself and can result in abrupt stops of the line on a cast. Lighter braid will definitely snap off a 2oz bait if this happens. I hope this helps for the next time. Thanks for the business!
